The inspiration for this programme revolved around
the musical personalities who have worked at Morley College in London. When
Michael Tippett was director of music during the 1940s he invited Matyas Seiber
to teach composition and harmony there. Ian Humphris, who until recently was
head of choral studies at the Centre for Young Musicians (who occupy the
College on Saturdays) was to have studied with Seiber but the latter's untimely
death prevented this. Nevertheless, he had been encouraged in his work by
Seiber.
