Known as the ‘English Palestrina’ Byrd was Elizabeth the First’s favourite court composer and had links with foreign composers, indulging in friendly competition with them. There will be an opportunity to hear one such exchange, between Byrd and De Monte, as well as works by his English colleagues Tallis and Tomkins, around the centrepiece of Byrd’s sublime Mass for Four Voices.

Monteverdi: Vespers
(Vespro della Beata Vergine 1610)

One of the towering achievements of the early Baroque, Monteverdi’s masterpiece is by turns deeply spiritual, achingly human and positively visceral. The intimate scale of this performance is close in spirit to Monteverdi’s original purpose of providing devotional music for a prince’s chapel.
